World Cup Betting Basics: Soccer Odds & Bet Types
Betting on the 2026 World Cup looks different from an NBA or NFL slate โ soccer is low-scoring, and crucially, a match can end in a draw. That one wrinkle changes how almost every market works. Here's the plain-English primer. (New to odds entirely? Read American Odds Explained first.)
The 3-way moneyline (1X2)
In US sports the moneyline has two outcomes. Soccer has three: home win (1), draw (X), or away win (2). You're picking one of three results over 90 minutes (plus stoppage time, but not extra time). Because a third outcome exists, even heavy favorites carry longer odds than you'd expect โ the draw is always lurking.
Draw No Bet & Double Chance
Two beginner-friendly ways to sidestep the draw:
- Draw No Bet โ pick a team; if the match draws, your stake is refunded. Safer, but shorter odds.
- Double Chanceโ cover two of the three outcomes (e.g. "home win or draw"). Higher win rate, smaller payout.
Totals โ over/under goals
Same idea as a US total (over/under), just with much smaller numbers. A World Cup total is often set around 2.5 goalsโ "over 2.5" needs 3+ goals in the match. Knockout games and tight defensive sides tend to play under; mismatches and open attacking teams push over.
Both Teams To Score (BTTS)
A simple yes/no: will bothteams find the net? It ignores who wins entirely โ a 1-1 draw and a 3-2 thriller both cash a "BTTS yes." Popular because it keeps you in the match even when the result swings.
Goalscorer props
The soccer cousin of a player prop:
- Anytime goalscorer โ does this player score at any point? The most popular prop in the sport.
- First goalscorer โ higher risk, higher reward.
- Shots / shots on target โ a steadier, volume-based alternative to betting on a goal landing.
A few World Cup-specific tips
- Group stage vs knockouts: group games can be cagey when a draw suits both teams; knockouts open up in extra time.
- Markets cover 90 minutesunless they say otherwise โ extra time and penalties usually don't count for match-result or goalscorer bets.
- Fatigue & rotation matter in a compressed tournament โ lineups can change a lot between matches.
