2026 World Cup Knockout Bracket: Path to the Final
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first with 48 teams and 104 matchesโ the biggest in history, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. If the new format has you confused about how a team actually reaches the final, here's the whole path, start to finish. (Following along live? Our World Cup hub has every score, fixture and result.)
The new 48-team group stage
Forty-eight teams are split into 12 groups of four. Each team plays the other three in its group once. The math that matters:
- The top two from each group advance (24 teams).
- The eight best third-place teams across all groups also advance.
- That makes 32 teams into the knockout rounds.
The knockout rounds
From there it's single-elimination โ win or go home, all the way down:
- Round of 32 โ 32 teams โ 16
- Round of 16 โ 16 โ 8
- Quarterfinals โ 8 โ 4
- Semifinals โ 4 โ 2
- Third-place playoff โ the two losing semifinalists
- Final โ at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on July 19, 2026
What happens if a knockout match is tied?
Unlike the group stage (where draws are fine and earn a point), a knockout match mustproduce a winner. If it's level after 90 minutes:
- Extra time โ two 15-minute halves are played in full.
- Penalty shootout โ if still tied, it goes to penalty kicks. This is where tournaments are won and broken.
How to read the bracket
Once the Round of 32 is set, the bracket is fixed โ each side is a mini-tournament, and the two side winners meet in the final. That's why "path" matters: a team's draw can be brutal or forgiving long before they reach the latter rounds. Knowing who a team could face two rounds ahead is half the fun (and, if you bet it, half the edge).
