A matchup edge compares what a player averages across the season against what they average specifically versus tonight's opponent. When the head-to-head number is meaningfully higher, the difference is the boost — and the sample size behind it matters more than the size of the gap.
Three things decide whether a boost is real signal or noise. First, how many meetings it's built on: three games against one defense is a coincidence, fifteen is a pattern. Second, whether the opponent's defense is still the same unit — personnel turnover and scheme changes quietly invalidate old history. Third, pace: a fast opponent inflates everyone's counting stats without any player-specific advantage at all.
Always read a matchup edge next to today's MLB injury report. A favourable edge against a defense missing its primary stopper is a different proposition than the same edge at full strength, and an edge for a player who is himself questionable is not a proposition at all.
